I want Dean to have friends who stay around. I want him to have multiple layers of friends and different, equally interesting relationships with them.

I want Dean to have fun, just for one episode even.

I want Dean to have one big blowout talk/fight with Cas where they get most of their baggage out in the open (I’m not talking about canon). I want Dean and Cas to help each other grow.

I want Dean to take on the angel tablet trials.

I want Dean to have a surprise birthday party with all the people he cares about around to help him enjoy himself. This can turn into a demon-killing angstfest, but have just a few fun scenes.

I want Sam and Dean to be close but not in a toxic way where they can’t have anyone else.

I want Dean to go to Purgatory and convince Benny to come back with him.

I want Dean to start training young hunters.

I want Dean to continue to mature in how he views women, as I think he generally did this season. I want to believe that the occasional slips, like his comments to Abaddon in 8x22, are an example of when he’s at a low point.

I want Dean to have more nice clothes.

I want to see Dean feel some pull towards Heaven as it becomes a graveyard, and start to have some faith he can’t quite understand, contrasting with Cas no longer having any faith or belief at all.

I want Dean to be someone who struggles, as we all do, but is basically a strong person, a person who refuses to let life destroy him, and who lifts up everyone around him, without losing himself.

I want Dean to sometimes wear nicely fitting trousers, and no jacket, with generous camera angels.

I want to see Dean dance.

I want the world, clearly.

there was no resolution of it in the end

because it WASN’T the end

many elements of the season didn’t have closure

because they WERE NOT SUPPOSED to come to full circle within the season

as I get it now, this was PART ONE OF THREE of a super-season

how Lilith had to die to make way for Lucifer—the real big bad

how Eve had to die to make way for Crowley/Castiel/Raphael who the fuck ever

how Raphael—once he had a female vessel—was painted as a one-dimensional villain and killed off to make way for Godstiel

how Naomi was killed to make way for Metatron

how many women in general who have died for the sole purpose of fueling the cishet while male protagonists’ man pain

And I get really mad.

Life is sure good if you’re a white dude.

Don’t forget: How Meg was redeemed through her own choices and was killed off while Crowley had redemption forced upon him and, as far as we know, gets to live and maybe even be a good guy.

MISSOURI WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BOBBY’S STORYLINE?? I love Bobby, but damn, that’s an opportunity missed.

The asphalt never seemed so black as it did now, stretching towards an Oklahoma skyline as the sun rose. Dean watched the road roll on towards Tulsa, somewhere over the horizon, and towards the next motel and the next angel. They had found seventeen of them by now and there were still more. Some were quiet and frightened. Cas had to convince them that he was no threat—they still remembered him—before Dean handed over fake IDs and credit cards and a rudimentary guide to life that Kevin and Sam had put together. How to eat, what to wear, what money was for and how to get it. Others were angry and violent, raging at the sky like lost preachers, people passing quickly by and shielding their children. These were the ones they had to take down, bind and gag and tie to a chair until they became docile and their fear showed through. One by one they found them, their wings clipped, their grace burned from them as they fell. One by one they tried to turn them into people, to stop them falling further into the darkness.

And Castiel. Dean glanced over at him, his head against the window, his eyes closed.

Is anyone else as totally bored of angels as I am? I suspect this is an unpopular opinion, so… cut.

In Seasons 4 and 5 when the angels were first introduced, they were introduced as a family. It was Dad and his four boys, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Lucifer, and then the rest of the angels, all of whom were supposedly brothers. The family analogy was kind of cheesy, I thought, but I went with it. If there’s one thing you have to put up with on the CW, it’s a constant emphasis on family.

Zachariah was different. He was more corporate: he wore a suit, he was first introduced in “It’s A Terrible Life” as a corporate boss, and that remained his image. Zachariah’s interests ran directly counter to those of Sam and Dean, but more importantly, he had no sympathy for humanity. He had no sympathy for anyone. That’s what marked him as different from Gabriel, Michael and Lucifer in particular; even though their interests were also fatal to humanity, they at least understood the situation in sympathetic terms. This marked them out from Zachariah, Uriel, Hester, or any of the other neatly-suited angels we met in those seasons. Those angels—the suit angels—lacked the personal investment of the archangels and they lacked Castiel’s ability to empathise with humans.

(It’s no coincidence that Castiel’s suit became more and more ragged over time; unlike Uriel, Castiel became attached to humans, attached to his ragged heroes living on the fringes, so his neat tie grew crooked and his trenchcoat became worn. Castiel left the “corporate” side and became “family”.)

In seasons 4 and 5, then, I could feel what was going on in heaven, if you get me, because it was happening in familial terms. Brothers, ancient enemies, finally facing each other in a great big family argument. An argument to end all arguments. It’s epic, but it’s something we as viewers can totally empathise with.

And then came seasons 6 and 7. Chaos in heaven. War. Slaughter. Lots of angels in suits who were apparently brothers, co-workers and warriors all at once. The familial and corporate analogies/metaphors get muddled. Who are these angels and why do I care that they are dying? What is heaven, exactly? A family? An army? An office building? What does it all look like? It’s all mixed up and I have no real image in my head of what I’m supposed to be caring about.

So I stop being able to care.

Then this season brought us Naomi. While I liked her function as a character, Naomi basically left me cold. Another angel in a suit—part horrible boss, part psycho dentist—this time sitting in an actual office. With actual paperwork at times. Paperwork, seriously. And other angels in suits coming in and nervously updating her, the way you would with a boss who could fire you at any moment. So are those angels brothers and sisters? Or co-workers? Or fellow warriors? Who the fuck knows at this point.

Metatron mixed the metaphors too: one minute he’s just a guy from the secretarial pool and the next he’s talking about “Dad” and the rest of the family. What? Secretarial pool? Is heaven really this banal? It strikes me that the writers have probably never worked in that particular kind of corporate environment. Maybe they think this analogy is interesting. To anyone who has ever spent 8 hours a day, 5 days a week beneath the flourescent lights of a corporate office, it’s not. It’s the most boring thing imaginable.

This is why heaven has ceased to have any meaning for me. The imagery is boring and the metaphors have become so, so mixed and stretched as to have become meaningless.

I really hope season 9 does something interesting with these fallen angels because, quite honestly, right now I feel like if I ever in my life see another angel, other than Castiel, it will be one angel too many and I will stab someone in the eye.

“If Supernatural is going to continue—and it’s already booked for another two years, on a network that can scarcely afford to throw one of its better shows away, so I guess what I really mean is “if I’m going to continue to want to watch it”—it would do well to find some fresh monsters, and have Sam and Dean, and Castiel too, stop expressing the same moldy regrets about past mistakes and the road not taken, and grow up, even if that means finding new things to bitch about. It’s probably a good sign that the show managed to get through a season finale without consigning either of the leads to temporary banishment to an afterlife or some place between worlds, and seeing Sam and (especially) Dean so choked-up from openly sharing their feelings is kind of new. It’s just not the kind of new I was hoping for.”

I think you know where I am going with this. Cas’ grace, being Cas’ essence and whatnot, is in love and could very much be just love itself; Samandriel did say that he thought Cas had too much “heart”.

Love is what made the angels fall.
