“Nikita”: a role model for the smart modern girl?
Great review of the new series Nikita up at re/action!
By Rivier
What smart modern girl doesn’t want to go to work in this outfit?
Writing recently in the Wall Street Journal, Amy Chozick used the debut this week of the CW’s new action-drama Nikita as the starting point for a discussion of a new trend in TV serials – the rise of the tough-girl heroine. According to Chozick, major US networks are seeking new bait to tempt a coveted female 18-34 demographic that’s rapidly wearying of more traditionally-scoped shows such as Desperate Housewives or Gossip Girl. Sample testing has apparently produced the revelation that women prefer far more assertive, proactive female characters on their shows – fewer bikini-clad lounging dolls, more absinthe-chugging, paddle-boarding hardbodies. And we’re not averse to a good dose of gore, either, as long as there’s a reason for the bloodletting and mayhem.
So, does the premiere of Nikita hit the spot?
